Category Natural / Scenic beauty

On the auspicious eve of new-year celebration is approaching, Angina Bird Sanctuary under Kumarganj block of South Dinajpur district waits to attract more tourists. More than 100 species of migratory birds use to come every year at Angina wetland during the advent of winter.

The district tourism department has also made elaborate arrangements to attract more tourists this time in winter. According to South Dinajpur tourism department sources as the Angina bird sanctuary has the potentiality to attract innumerable tourists, the department has also taken initiative for the necessary implementation now-a-days. Being located very close to the border area, Angina has often turned into a battlefield as free movement of culprits could be prevented completely.

Particularly in winter when many people choose Angina as a convenient picnic spot, such unrest becomes a regular phenomenon. Hence picnic lovers do not prefer Angina as dearth of proper drinking water is reported to cause major problem for the tourists.

The concerned tourism department has also requested the district police and the BSF authorities to play an active role in ensuring the security of the tourists coming from neighbouring districts like Malda and Raiganj of North Dinajpur apart from the district residents. Picnic parties throng the area particularly from the end of December to entire January.

South Dinajpur district police have already maintain vigil there initially in winter and could be extended later if such proposal comes from the tourism department. “We are ready to take care of the security of the tourists and picnic parties from 25 December onwards,” said a senior Balurghat based police official.
